But he’s served 10 years at BP and has begun the search for someone to take the reins. Suddenly, the oil giant needs to accept the reality of life without him .

Talk to almost anyone at the top of BP, these past few years to realise what a force Peter Sutherland has been in the background. While the company has had its problems in America, they have been operational. On personnel matters, notably the attempt by Lord Browne and his friends to get the chief executive’s term extended, and then Browne’s departure following his lying under oath, Sutherland has played a pivotal role. When the Odds Are Against You

Have you ever used an excuse for a failure? Bad genes – lousy teacher – not smart enough – not pretty enough – not built right – not strong enough – bad school system – no one cares?

Handling Set-Backs

A young guy from New Jersey moves to California and goes to a big “everything under one roof” department store looking for a job. Instead of going to the Human Resources Department, he asks to see the store manager. He tells the manager that he wants a sales job: He can quickly determine if a shopper is a real buyer, and he can close most of the Buyers.

The manager says, “Do you have any sales experience?”

The young guy says, “Yeah, I was a garden equipment salesman back home in New Jersey.”

Well, the manager liked the way the young guy spoke, so he offered to put him on trial for a few days as a Sales Trainee. “Start tomorrow. Just report to the floor manager on level one. I’ll come down after we close and see how you did.”

His first day on the job was rough, but he got through it. After the store closed, the store manager came down. “How many sales did you make today?”

“Just One.”

The boss says, “Just one? Our salespeople average 20 or 30 sales a day, with an average gross of about $1,500 each. How much was your one sale for?

The new guy says, “$111,447.23.”

“Over one hundred thousand dollars? What the heck did you sell?”

“First, I sold him a small fishing hook. Then, I sold him a large fishing hook. Then he bought a new fishing rod and reel.

When I asked him where he was going fishing, he said, “down off of Costa Mesa”. So, I asked him if he wanted to have his own boat down there. He said ‘Yes,’ so we went down to the boat department and I sold him that twin engine 21 foot Starcraftt with a trailer.

But, his Honda Civic couldn’t pull the boat, so I took him down to the automotive department, where he traded in the Honda on a 4X4 Chevy Suburban.”

The manager said, “A guy came in here to buy a fish hook and you sold him a boat and SUV?”

The new Senior Sales Representative says, “No … I forgot about the Tampons. He came in to buy a box of tampons for his wife, and I said, “Well, your weekend is shot, how would you like to go fishing?”

Files proliferate quickly on personal computers and, without a bit of planning, users can end up hunting through a long list of miscellaneous files with names that seemed sensible when they were created, but now appear very mysterious.

Windows automatically saves new text files in My Documents and graphics files in My Pictures unless you tell it differently- great for knowing where your files land, but not so great when it comes time to find them again. A little planning will help you create an easy to use organizational system for all your documents.

Using nested folders is an easy way to organize your documents. Do you use your computer for both personal and business projects? Think about creating a separate folder for “Personal” and “Business” documents. Within these folders, divide into additional categories.

In the “Personal” folder, you may find a mishmash of letters to friends and family, letters to the editor of your local newspaper, complaints to companies about unsatisfactory products, downloaded recipes and website pages about a variety of topics, and so on. A “Correspondence” folder could be divided into more folders labeled “Friends and Family” and “Business Correspondence”; the “Friends and Family” folder could be further subdivided into folders for each individual, assuming you correspond regularly; you could add a “Miscellaneous” folder for those you correspond with infrequently. If you communicate via email, you could also copy and paste or download your own emails and the responses you receive, particularly where the letters contain valuable information. Your “Friends and Family” folder may also be a good place to store personal photos.

Take a good look at the website downloads and miscellaneous files you’ve gathered. Do you have a lot of recipes, or information about vintage cars or alternative energy resources? Create broad categories, and then subdivide; “Alternative Energy Resources” suggests several subcategories: “Wind”, “Solar”, “Biodiesel”, etc.

On the business end, you may have correspondence, project notes, background materials, finished and in-progress writings, and a variety of financial files. A number of organizational options present themselves; in terms of financial files, do you want to group them all together in a single folder and subdivide as necessary? Or do you want to keep the financial files with the corresponding project files?

Say you do freelance work for several companies, and have a variety of files for each company. One method of organizing is to create a “Freelance” folder, then a folder for each client; subdivide each of these into “General Information”, “Projects”, “Invoices”, “Correspondence”, and so on. The “Invoices” folder for each client could be subdivided again by year, and contain all invoices you’ve sent the client. “Projects” folders could be subdivided into “New Projects”, “Work in Progress”, “Done but not Sent” (for files you need to submit), and “Sent”. This not only helps you saves finished files, but allows you to organize your work as you do it.

In the “Freelance” folder, you may also want to provide a “Financial Summary” folder containing one or several files which summarize the financial information for all clients. While you’re planning your file organization, also give some thought to how to name your files. It helps to create a systematic way of naming files. Invoices, for instance, could include “Invoice” plus the name of your client, the project, and the date submitted: “Invoice Harvard Stephen Crane 10-20-2005″. Correspondence about the project could be labeled “Correspondence Harvard Stephen Crane 10-20-2005″. It’s easy enough to rename existing files to fit into your new organization plan; in Windows, simply right-click on the file’s icon, scroll down to “Rename”, left-click, then type in the new name.

Don’t forget to back up your files! Burn a CD to save your information and free up your hard drive in the process. And apply the same type of planning with your backup files as you do on your hard drive. A little organization can make your life on the computer a whole lot easier.

It’s true, I am now fully mobile. No I don’t mean I have bought another car, or that I have got myself some rocket powered roller skates (though that would be nice), or even a new mobile phone.

No, what I mean is my internet useage is going mobile. I have got myself one of those newfangled mobile broadband things from www.broadbandgenie.co.uk. A dongle that allows you to take your laptop anywhere in the country and still be connected to broadband speed internet.

So I am now fully mobile, where ever I go work and internet shall follow me (which is better than that sounds to be honest), I can go where ever I want and still be able to get work done. Which, lets face it, is pretty amazing. Working from a cafe in Edinburgh is now as easy as working from the desk in my office.

Speaking of which my office will start collecting dust now that I am now longer tied to it, but that’s fine by me. My work is now mobile and the whole world my office. Though I am refusing to pay the cleaning bills for the whole world, being mobile isn’t worth that much!
