Beyond three and four act story structure, lies the Hero’s Journey.

The Hero’s Journey is the most usable story structure consisting of at least 106 stages and the template for successful contemporary stories, from Star Wars to Al Pacino Scarface to The Incredibles to War of the Worlds to The Dirty Dozen to Midnight Cowboy.
The Hero’s Journey is a valuable template because:

a) It attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

b) It gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

c) Interpreted metaphorically and symbolically, it allows an infinite number of varied stories to be created.

One (usually critical) stage of the journey is the First Threshold.

The First Threshold encompasses the Far Away, Entrance, Threshold Guardian, Belly of the Whale, Trials, Allies and Enemies, Escape and other elements. Thus writers who believe that the First Threshold is a simple affair are dead wrong.

The significance of the First Threshold lies in the fact that it is a point of no return. Once the Hero crosses it, there is no coming back. A simple analogy is that of committing murder – once you have killed somebody, you are changed, you are not the same person, you cannot go back. This analogy also indicates that the First Threshold need not be a physical place…it can be a state or similar.

The Hero is accompanied to the First Threshold, usually a Mentor. But it can be any person or archetype. In The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the Hero is accompanied by a Shape Shifter.

Hero et al stop a distance away from the First Threshold. Here, the Hero is told that this is a place of danger, of change, of no return. He is told to be wary. The crossing is usually signified by a physical barrier. In Lawrence of Arabia it is a railway line.

Upon entering the First Threshold, strange, magical and unfamiliar creatures are seen. These are representative of the New World the Hero is about to enter.

Further into the First Threshold, Hero et al are stopped by a Threshold Guardian, someone of some minor authority. Hero et al are questioned and it is up to them to prove their worthiness by passing the Threshold Guardian.

The activity of the First Threshold occurs underground, in darkness. Thus Hero et al enter a dark, underground vicinity of some sort, often a cavern. This is known as the Belly of the Whale.

The entrance to the cavern will be guarded by another figure of authority, who will explain the (new) rules of this place.

Within the cavern, the Hero will undergo a trial. He will pass or be helped to pass it. His assistants in the passing of the trial may be already known to him or may become new allies, for this is a place where new allies and enemies are distinguished and differentiated.

There are plenty of cheap hotels in Florida once you know where to look. If you love the idea of taking a cheap vacation in the sun then Florida is the place to be. With accommodation starting from as little as $35 a night it’s a good idea to do some research to see just how much you can save. One of the best things about spending less money on your accommodation is you’ll have more money left over for getting out and enjoying yourself.

Most people think of Disneyworld when they think of Florida, and if you’re staying close by you may as well call in and have a look. Although booking seats to see these big name performers is never going to be cheap you may find that by shopping around you can at least get the lowest priced tickets available. If you love your movies then you’ll not want to miss a tour of the MGM studios. There’s fun for everyone, including the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular which is a live show recreating some of the great action scenes from movies through the years. After watching the show you can wander down and take a look at the handprints of the stars outside the Chinese Theater. One thing’s for sure, you’ll never run out of entertainment while you’re in Florida.

Compiling a list of the history’s ten best writers is like skating on a heated swimming pool. Just when you get started, you find yourself in hot water.

The reason is: writing’s completely subjective. What interests you may not interest me. We all read for different reasons.

But, here – in no particular order — is another list of the world’s top wordsmiths:

1. Aesop – Around 600 B.C. this Greek slave began to chronicle fables from around the world. His stories – like the one about the tortoise and hare – gave animals human qualities, and illustrated critical life lessons.

2. Aristophanes – Reportedly the first comedy writer, back in 400 B.C. He combined plays with song and repetition to provide entertainment for ancient Greeks.

3. Socrates – A contemporary of Aristophanes, he was likely history’s first “self-help” writer. He taught people to seek ultimate truths by questioning conventional wisdom and examining their own beliefs. He said folks shouldn’t accept opinion as fact.

4. Sophocles – Another guy with no last name. He created plays that usually centered on a single heroic character who chose an unpopular course of action.

5. William Shakespeare – This brilliant author’s plays and phrases will live forever. If historians ever prove a theory that he was a composite of three dramatists, the list of “top ten” authors will immediately expand to 12.

6. Benjamin Franklin – This multi-talented American championed succinct writing, and his epigrams became part of our national heritage. Ben warned, “He that speaks much is much mistaken.”

7. Abraham Lincoln – Sure, he nearly always heads the list of “best Presidents.” But this Illinois native crafted some of this country’s finest speeches, including the Gettysburg Address.

8. Mark Twain – He’s been called America’s finest author because he wrote in American dialect, using phrases and speech unique to the United States. He punctured pompous prose, and laced his stories with regional references.

9. Winston Churchill/Franklin Roosevelt – These Allied leaders led their countries through World War II, and their vivid words inspired millions.

10. You or me? – Who knows? There’s an old saying that “there’s always room at the top.” Good writing can change minds, and great writing can change the world.

All computers and their components are subject to failure. In fact sooner or later every business will be confronted with some type of computer failure. The largest threat to businesses during a failure will be some type of data loss or data corruption. While the causes of data loss and data corruption vary, not all are easily fixed.

When a data loss or data corruption occurs, many times the only option is to restore the data from a previously created backup of the affected data. Many businesses today over look the importance of data backups until they suffer the unexpected loss or corruption of valuable data. Once this occurs it would be too late, unless the business is lucky enough to restore the data by physically recreating all the affected files from scratch. This of course is only possible if they have a hard copy or another source from which to recreate the data. It will also cost the business a valuable amount of man hours in recreating the data as well. That is if they are lucky enough to be able to even recreate the data in the first place.

If your business has made backups of all data stored on the hard drives, restoring that data will go much more quickly and require a lot less effort. It will also require a lot less man hours and tears shed over the loss that has occurred.

Today there are many options available to businesses for storing and backing up their data. Some of the options available are tape drives and tape libraries, CD-R’s and CD-RW’s to DVD technologies. There is also the option to use NAS (Network Area Storage) and SAN (Storage Area Networks) and even remote backups over the internet. Even Windows XP/Server 2003 offers a restore point in case your system becomes corrupted. Of course just having these tools available to you is not enough. They need to be used properly and on a continuous basis to be effective.

Sooner or later all systems will face some type of failure that will require a restore from backup. The point is to perform those backups so they are there when you need them.

It is recommended that you sit down with your systems administrator to create a backup plan for your business immediately if you have not done so already. Also recommended, is that you review your backup plan yearly as well. When discussing your backup plan there are certain options to consider. Such as how often to perform the backups and what type of backup media is best suited for your business. Depending on your type of business and how much your data changes from day to day you may want to perform backups weekly, daily, or several times per day. For most small to mid-sized businesses I would recommend a full backup once per week with incremental backups at the end of each work day.

You will also want to consider whether or not to keep some of your backups off site in the case your business is affected by some type of natural or man made disaster. In addition you may also want software to monitor your backup process in order to ensure that your backups are not corrupted as well. This is a common experience with some types of backup media as well.

Finally you may also want to perform a system restore on an occasional basis so that you can check the effectiveness of the restoration process that you have set in place and to practice it so it goes as smoothly as possible.

Following these steps may be essential to your business continuity should your systems fail and you suffer a loss or corruption of data. Setting up a backup plan as well as a restoration plan will also go a long way in ensuring your business operations if you run into a system failure. This would help establish a “who is to do what” list if your systems should fail.

Failing to backup your business data, especially mission critical data is nothing short of a recipe for disaster. Nothing is as important to your business as the data that sits on the hard drives of your systems.
